Pay for boiler or wait for guarantee?

Had a new boiler fitted last Saturday, arranged with fitter to pay later on in the week (Thursday) prior to installation. On Wednesday night had to have gas emergency Cadent out as huge gas leak from boiler. Gas wasn’t connected to boiler properly and has been leaking gas into my house. Cadent informed they will be reported to Riddor. They capped gas and boiler fitter came back yesterday morning full of apologies and has sorted it out. Boiler is now fine and working great. He’s knocked £40 off the price as a gesture of goodwill. We got a good deal on the boiler, despite the problems, I’m not after compensation / reduction of price etc.
but the boiler was supposed to come with a 7yr warranty. On fitting, the engineer said they’d post off the paperwork and I’d get the warranty through the door. The boiler fitter is still waiting for pay for us as I said I wanted to wait a few more days to make sure we were happy, and he’s fine.

Is this normal re the guarantee? Should I hold off payment until that comes through? What do I do if it never appears?

Pay the installer and make sure you get a receipt detailing the boiler make and serial number. If the warranty document doesn't arrive just contact the manufacturer with you proof of purchase.

Granted it was ten years ago, but looking back I can see my Worcester warranty cert is dated two weeks after the installation, and my GasSafe cert is dated four months after. They take time, I'm sure with covid too, which is probably unfair to hold against your installer. Just make sure you have receipts, and that the benchmark page has been fully completed in the manual. Remember you'll need annual services, recorded in the manual, in order to keep the warranty valid.0

my installer always ask for payment on the same day and most will ask for a deposit before the work is started. the warranty can take a few weeks to come through and mine didn't even come through even though the installer had sent off the paper work to worcester bosch.
i am more concerned about your install with a gas leak as that is dangerous. are you sure this installer is even gas safe registered? if he is dodgy then the warranty will be void.0 -
I also had a new boiler (Worcester) fitted two weeks ago, and no paperwork as of yet. I noted on the website, the boiler has to be registered within 30 days, so would advice to keep an eye on the progress of the paperwork, just in case.
I notice when arranging work and paying, the engineer is lightening fast with email replies, as soon as done and paid, he seems to revert to replying to any queries with all the speed of a carrier pigeon on its last legs!0 -
Thanks all, I will ask for a receipt with the boiler make and serial number. The bit in the booklet has been filled out as it should be - also checked by the emergency gas person. He is 100% gas safe registered, we checked and so did the the emergency gas person, negligence on their part but was put right as soon as they were made aware (probably through fear of being responsible for potentially blowing up a whole row of houses...!)0

You can't do anything about him being riddored so forget about that
it is a legal requirement that your boiler is registered with gas safe
the registration for the warentee is your responsibility, however a lot of boiler manu will cover both on their web site (so when I register the boiler with the manu they will do the gas safe paperwork for me), some manu will also give you longer warentee if the installer does the registration, what make of boiler is it ?
the serial no is on the data plate fixed to the boilerI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
I remember at my parents house a gas safe engineer came to fit a hob and he left that with a leak. Another gas safe engineer then fitted a new boiler for them and that was left with a leak. Not sure what the point of gas safe is.0

i haven't had a problem with gas leaking thank god. but i did employ a gas safe engineer to fit my taps and that leaked! gas safe registered do not mean they are competent as they should be. you should also look at their reviews (bearing in mind they can be faked) or better still get someone recommended, but even that can go wrong.fred246 said:I remember at my parents house a gas safe engineer came to fit a hob and he left that with a leak.
