Should I buy a 'real' Christmas tree or stick with artificial?

  • Our local council take unwanted real trees as part of their recycling system.  They collect from the kerbside.   We are in North Herts.   Maybe your council does that?  I think they are shredded and turned into compost.

Council did same here and don't have to belong to the garden waste scheme [Hampshire]

If only MSE had a dedicated Christmas/special events board...?

Any kind of discussion of artificial trees surely has no place here.

And my small, slow growing tree lives in a pot out in the garden - had it for years now and I’ll bring it in when it is the proper time to put it up/decorate it and put it back in the garden for next year when it’s over.

Quite right, if it was simply a discussion about artificial trees...
    ....but it isn't. :)

I feel my post has a place here.  I'm not discussing my artificial tree just after advice on a living tree - pro's and con's etc 🐈
Just my opinion, no offence 🐈
  • Thanks B and F, will look into kerbside collection in my area 👍

It might also be worth checking if the Forestry Commission near you do sales.  We can sometimes buy "trees" that are actually the top six-feet of much bigger trees that are being harvested for timber locally, and these are perhaps a suitable environmental compromise.
  • For those with limited funds why not look for an appropriately sized and shaped FALLEN branch.  Placed in the corner of a room with careful decoration it can look like the real thing. Otherwise a FALLEN deciduous branch can look effective, especially if coloured white.
  • Great suggestions here.  Hadn't thought about just a branch TRH, definitely worth considering 🐈

I've seen some lovely ones in the past, white / glitter + baubles etc
