Winter tyre recommendations
Looking to put winter tyres on my car this year, having thought about it but not got round to it previous years. I've had a quick look on black circles but am somewhat baffled by the options. I think I would prefer to avoid budget tyres (though I use them happily the rest of the year) but among the known brand there is still a wide range of prices e.g. Yokohama £74, Pirelli £98, Hankook £101, Goodyear £103...
FWIW tyre size is R17 225/45 and I live in a part of the country that gets regular cold snaps, occasional snow and my house is beyond the priority gritting routes.
Suggestions welcome!

I have continental TS830p
very very good tyres! Not cheap at £250 a corner, mine are 245/35/191 -
Vredestein and Toyo are worth a look. Should be £70-80 a corner depending on speed rating.
Subaru fit Yokohama Geolander mud and snow tyres to Foresters.2 -
Could I suggest you look into the Auto Express review sections? They have a comprehensive list of tests on tyres.

I have Continental winter tyres which are excellent in the snow but I might just get Michelin Cross Climate+ next time for all year use. Saves messing around changing wheels/tyres twice a year and the recent all-season tyres get very good reviews.

My husband always used Vredestein
Our tyre fitter was very impressed with them.. He tested them on an ice track - at the suppliers invitation - and was amazed at the grip.
We lived in a rural, single track road in highland area. On a snow covered road we ended upside down in a ditch with only the wheels showing above, writing off the car.
We changed to Vredestein for the winter after that.2 -
For me its Michelin Cross Climate (check reviews)
Used them on an auto estate in the snow and never an issue, have them again on a Honda SUV and again very good.2 -
I've swapped over from summers to winters, ever since a very close call down a back lane one surprise snowy morning in October 2008 or 9.
With a car change this spring, I've decided to give all-seasons a try, and have a set of Cross Climates.
As far as brand goes, if you're so undemanding as to be happy with Chinese ditchfinders through the summer, I can't see why you wouldn't be in the winter, too. But if you want decent rubber one part of the year, why not all year?1 -
OP, Vredestein or Nokian if you want dedicated Winter tyres. Michelin Cross Climates or Goodyear Vector 4Seasons if you want all season tyres.3

Cross climates are good but expensive.
Nokian are very good also and a little cheaper. I've used both and have Cross climates on at the minute2 -
I have used Quadraxer and now Quadraxer 2 all year round. Excellent in South Perthshire.1
