black mold

Hi, i am looking for some advice regarding removing black mold from my bathroom, some on the shower and few other places but primarily from the bathroom ceiling where is has got quite bad. I am concerned about disturbing it and breathing it in and would like to ask what would be the best masks/respirators to use for this without breaking the bank?

Many thanks

    Really?

Just get some spray with a high bleech content (flash + bleech / mold and mildew whatever) and spray it arounfd and then rinse later.

Also maybe consinder a "window" vac to remove damp from the shower cubicle / walls after use. (and maybe every other day a light spray with said above things 5 mins before a shower eavery few days for general upkeep).

And keep the extracor fan on a lot in the current weather. Or course the "window" vac is pretty much a must if you like warm showers in this weather as with the can there is only so much it can do.

These "window" vacs are cheap in aldi etc often, no need for an expensive one. However again empty the container after every use unless you want to end up bleeching that too for mould (I have seen people cause this in them!).

Yes there are plenty of products which use a bleach to kill mould, just be careful you don’t get it on anything that would stain,

Yes, this is true, take towels out of bathroom first is a good idea there! I had forgotten that bit!
  • Hi, thanks for all the replies, I have had hydrogen peroxide recommended to me to clean it, I had considered bleach but thought as its on the ceiling hydrogen peroxide might be better because some will drip down, don't know what you think of hydrogen peroxide?

Do none of you recommend some kind of mask or respirator? I don't want to breathe in the mold, tiny spores etc, I read it can cause respiratory illness

    Thanks again

Use something like the Cif mould remover or the dettol mould remover sprayed onto a clean kithen sponge (one of those with a scrubber attached is what I've used) and wiped over the ceiling /walls /areas you want to de-mould. I use the sponge side rather than the scrubber.

This method avoids overly wetting the surface, damage to other areas from errant spray, and drips.

I've only ever used a bleach based product (which works instantly)  never one with hydrogen peroxide in.

I normally just wear a decorating mask, or you could use a disposable face mask of the sort that you can pick up easily in a chemist.

A normal squeegee used after every shower will be enough to remove surface water - we have an oxo good grips one with a suction wall holder.

  • get a good mould remover. sainsburys do there own make. spray it with that, rinse it off afterward. when its all dry paint bathroom with dulux bathroom paint. after bathing or showering allways open the window to ventilate. I sometimes leave bathroom window ajar all night. in the morning bathroom is fresh and no mould.

What are you consisidering "hydrogen peroxide" is other than a bleaching agent? (other belaches will be better).

And as for your concerns. Spray leave five or so min sand rinse. The spores are no issue unless you have some unspecified issue or are licking them off the wall ;-)

And once you have cleaned the mould off remember that you need to ventilate the room properly to avoid the mould coming back. Use extractor fans where fitted and if not leave the window open.
