Unknown Bank Account

Hi there everyone. When I was born in 2000, my aunt and uncle set up a bank account for me. They told my parents that they would put money into it for Christmas and birthdays. My parents don’t really know much about the account, only that my dad remembers signing something. They don’t know the bank where the account is held. We assumed that I would be allowed access at 18, but I am now nearly 21. We think that I may be able to gain access when I turn 21, but as we know nothing about the account we aren’t sure.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the account that your aunt and uncle set up for you either.  If your aunt and uncle are still alive, what did they tell you about it when you asked them for the money?

If you are the only beneficiary of a bank account that your aunt and uncle  have set up for you in trust (because the account couldn't be in your own name when you were a baby because you couldn't sign for it),  you can request access to the money in it and they as trustee(s) of the account should transfer it to you. You are legally an adult now and banks do not recognise any special preferences about being 21 rather than 18 to access money if it's in a 'bare trust' account for you. So if the money is currently in a normal bank account rather than a fixed term deposit, there should not be an issue.  This is assuming of course that the account actually exists and they did actually get around to putting money into it and not later withdrawing it.

Thankyou both, I am not supposed to know about the account. Only my parents and grandparents were supposed to know. Is it possible that they are waiting until my 21st birthday to transfer it to me (if it exists)?

One for your dad I think - he  needs to ask Aunt and Uncle
