  • to be honest save your money for another car, sell your old car as spares and repairs on a place like ebay /ebid etc you are bound to get soemthign fr it , but do state in the description that a non refundable deposit paid into your account within so many hours and colleciton only as this will save you time and money in the long run and will ensure they come get the car. make sure you take photos (good ones ...not in the dark) of the areas that a person like you would want to know about, state about the conditions etc.

with concerns of another car, there are penty of bargaisn, and unless you race it aroudn town and do hand brake turns any car can be trust worthy espcailly for a 1k car.

Another option would be to check with the mechanic if he can source a good secondhand engine and fit that. This is only worth doing if the rest of the car is in good nick, though.

A known good Honda engine of that sort of vintage shouldn't exactly cost major money unless it's a sought-after VTEC B16...

Oh, and I'd get the cambelt changed immediately :) on the new engine.
  • Wow, thanks guys, you've all given me really good advice. I would certainly like to get some money for the car. The thought of taking it apart terrifies me though as the most technical thing I've ever done to the car is change an indicator bulb!!

I think I'll put it on ebay and see what happens. In terms of insurance etc when do I cancel that - is it when the car is transferred to someone else? And would I have to wait til I got confirmation from DVLA before cancelling it?

    Thanks

I *think* you can cancel the car insurance now if it's not going to be on the road. If there's any tax left cash it in at post office (I guess someone will have said that but if not...)

The car becomes the property of it's new owner as soon as they sign the V5. Make sure you keep your part and post it yourself and give them the appropriate counterpart.

Correct regarding the insurance cancellation - only if the car is off the road.
But bear in mind that if it is set on fire or stolen (admittedly unlikely but not unheard of) then you'll have no insurance to claim.

Tax can be reclaimed but you'll only get full months back and no partial months.

DON'T do the auction idea, do the classified section as you can then state the whole car isn't for sale put parts all of the "parts" from the car are, this way you get more money from it, and also state that people need to bring tolls as you haven't got the time of energy to take the machine apart.

its been known for some years that because the scrap yards now have to obide by laws that revent them stoking cars like they used to, you now have much more of a chance to sell items from the car which hold money to the each section.

you vcan cancel the insurance and you can gaina "refund" from the remainign tax disc time..
    BUT

you will lose on the no claims from that insurance company, and the tax disc is only worth so much so if you only have a few months left... it aint worth a penny in real terms

Am I right in thinking you're suggesting selling individual bits of the car and people will turn up and take it off the car themselves? I agree that more money could be made this way, but I'd be a bit wary of doing it. There's always the possibility that people will disagree with what you've said they have bought, damage other bits of the car when taking their bit off, or create an almghty mess.

I think if the OP is preapared to do this, great. But I personally would stick it in a normal auction as 'spares or repairs' and get rid of the lot in one go

  • why wary, hell everyone does it, you see plenty on autotrader and ebay for years doing it, espcially since the new law came with with the scrap yards.

Like I said, just my personal opinion, but I'd be worried about people damaging other bits of the car or leaving a mess.
