Claiming private car allowance
Hi does anyone know where on the self assessment form I can claim private car allowance? We’ve calculated that it will be over £2500 & I’m employed but using my own car. Just can’t find where on the SA100 to actually give the info? I’ve held on for ages 3 times to the help line & web chat but haven’t managed to get through.

Do you mean mileage allowance for using your own car for business? 45p/mile first 10k miles then 25p/mile.1

Think it is claimed under expences. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon1

You can either claim per mile as above rates, or submit actual expenses for fuel, insurance, servicing etc. This will be pro rata based on your ratio of private to business miles. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thats helpful thank you.
I’m sure they make tax returns complicated so people don’t claim anything back!0 -
In my experience, claiming the 45 pence / 25 pence rates is always more profitable. You would need a rather large petrol guzzler to switch the balance.macman said:You can either claim per mile as above rates, or submit actual expenses for fuel, insurance, servicing etc. This will be pro rata based on your ratio of private to business miles.1 -
It's not remotely complicated. If you do 10K a year, of which 6,000 are business miles, you can claim 6000 x £.0.45. One of the easier parts of self-assessment.Pemd said:Thats helpful thank you.

Minus any sums paid for by the employer, such as fuel allowance of course. The sum is also refunded relative to the marginal tax rate, so 20% or 40% of the 45p per mile for the first ten thousand miles.macman said:
