Renewed Desktop PC

Hi
I have come across 'renewed desktop PC's' on Amazon.  The one I really like the look of is a Dell.  But I notice it doesn't have wifi.  I know it would be fine with the cables connected to the router etc.  But, I was just wondering how good the wifi adapters are?  Would I get a good signal, especially if I am in the same room as the router?
I the wifi adaptors are good, could I have a recommendation on which one to buy please?
Many thanks

  • This is the spec.   Is it any good?   Its for general office work.  Usual  Microsoft products and internet.  I usually have about 8 or 10 tabs open at anyone time.  The only thing I can see that is missing is the wifi and would like to know if I can get around this? I do need at least 8gb RAM and 64 bit as well as windows 10 pro.

Can you really not just run an ethernet cable? I use the flat white cables and they fit in the gap between carpet and skirting board so you can't see them. They also make flexible cables with a very small diameter too. Check out flat and ultra slim ethernet cables. It seems sad to be on wifi if the router is in the same room.
  • As far as I know, most PCs don't come equipped with Wifi out-of-box and if you are near a router, then I would use ethernet. There are a few decent CAT5/6/7 cables for not much money. Like you, I am in the same room as the router and since switching to ethernet cable, I find it to be so much better.

If you still want to use WiFi, you could open it up and add a PCIe wifi card (frees up USB port and more reliable/faster than a USB version anyway) although do check on the warranty terms.

If this is not an option and would rather use USB, check what WiFi bands your router supports (e.g. 2.5GHz/5GHz or both) and if the computer has a USB 3.0 port.

Almost granted 2.4Ghz is supported (what with having been defined since 1997), but you don't need USB 3 for Wifi, you can get a 5Ghz connection in a USB 2 port if needs must.
  • OK.  I am happy to run an ethernet cable.

Can someone tell me if the remaining spec is decent enough for what I need?   Obviously I will have to buy, or perhaps use my old monitor and keypad.

Spec looks decent for basic use and is pretty cheap enough. I like that it has i5 CPU and a SSD drive.
  • Thanks.  Have ordered.

128Gb SSD might be a touch of the small size depending on what you install
