Tails Equivalent

Does anyone know if there is a more simple equivalent of the Tails operating system?
I don't need the surveillance and censorship protection that Tails gives, nor do I need to use the Tor browser.
I just want an operating system that I can run from a USB stick on any laptop where no attempt is made to access (and possibly corrupt) the laptop's hard drive.

can you not just make a bootable USB stick from, say, Ubuntu?

If you want something "more simple" and you're not even using Tor why are you using Tails in the first place?
If you're that concerned about the hard drive just take it out?  Or is this a works machine?

AFAIK any version of Linux/BSD etc will come with the ability to access the hard drive(s) , I can't understand what you are trying to achieve  :s  . You can of course tailor any version of Linux to create a bootable USB but it would be virtually impossible to stop disk access , the USB is a disk after all.

  • When watching streams of live sport, it can be hit and miss if I click on a dodgy link and risk getting malware on my laptop.
So to prevent that, I watch via a Tails on a USB stick. It works pretty well much of the time, but that's not really what Tails is designed for so I was wondering if there might be a better alternative?

No, just use full disk encryption like bitlocker, or one of the many free ones like veracrypt. It will keep 99.999% or more out, unless your password is  PASSWORD

You can put on Sandboxie, that will stof stuff taking over your laptop, but still could make your existing files copyable. Plus there are other different roll back strategies like running it in virtualbox and making a rollback point, or using some disk roll back software like DeepFreeze - or  a free version
  • I have used Time Freeze from Toolwiz in the past, but that has a habit of suddenly crashing from time to time. Is DeepFreeze any better?

Personally never used deepfreeze as it costs, never tried drive vaccine, Clean Slate, Shadow Protect Desktop, Have tried  https://www.rollbacksoftware.com/ - the free version on xp, and if you make the rollback too small it did crash. Comodo also had a free version which they disbanded that worked well.

I haven't used it for a while, but I've used Slax many times in the past.
It's a portable GNU/Linux OS.  Like Tails, but without Tor.
