gas ch boiler temp settings help please
In new place have a newish combi boiler with the usual controls on the boiler e.g. temperature water heating on/off etc. but also a small white box controller for the room we are in.
A bit confused do we set the boiler temperature to Economy setting which is just a big E or to a recommended temperature? Then once set we also set the plastic controller box to a temperature? Thanks

You should download the manual for the boiler and the controller and read these to work out where to set each temperature.
There are three temperatures you need to set:
1 The temperature of the hot water that the Combi boiler will produce when you turn on a hot tap. This temperature is set on the boiler and you want this to be around 50-55 degrees C to avoid legionella risks UNLESS you have small children that can reach the hot taps, in which case you want it set to 44 degrees C, and will need to occasionally up this to 55 degrees and run all the hot taps in turn for a couple of minutes at this higher temperature.
2 The temperature of the hot water that the Combi boiler will produce in the central heating (CH) system. This temperature is also set on the boiler and you want it to be around 50 degrees C (the newish Combi boiler will be a condensing model), but unless your heating system has been designed with this low temperature in mind, you may find that it cannot heat your home adequately. Set it to 50 degrees C and see how you get on - see further details below.
3 The temperature of the room where the thermostat is (the small white box controller). You set this on the controller. You want this set to about 18 or 19 degrees C, depending on whether the room is a hallway or a living room. You might find you need to increase this temperate as it controls whether the boiler produces hot water for the CH system and also operates the pump that sends this hot water around the CH system. If your home is not warm enough, you should try increasing this by 1 degree. or half a degree if it has this resolution, until the home gets warm enough. If it never gets warm enough, it means the temperature of the water in the CH system is too low and you need to increase it. I would up it by 5 degrees, and return the room thermostat to 18 degrees C and try again. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
Assuming that the boiler is a condensing boiler then set the central heating water temperature at the E position or lower. This will allow the boiler to run in the more efficient condensing mode when the return water temperature drops low enough.
We have our hot water temperature set to 50 degrees.
Once you have set the temperatures on the boiler leave them alone.
Set the "white box" which is the room thermostat to the desired temperature, this will vary from house to house and person to person but we find that 20 degrees on our thermostat which is in the hallway gives a nice temperature throughout the house.
If you have TRV's on your radiators you can then go around and turn these up or down if you get rooms that are getting too hot or you find are too cold.1
