Ebay Refund Advice

Hi Folks
Just need some advice about a refund I am trying to get.
Basically, this person was selling three separate items which can make up a full set. I sent them an offer on one item making it clear it was for all three. They accepted, I paid, but they only sent me one item as they either didnt read the offer message or were chancing it. After a bit of to and fro (they said dont normally accept returns) but they would send a refund if I paid for return post - they said they had spoken to ebay who agreed with the plan. I posted it back, they have now got the item back but are not willing to refund the full amount as they are out the postage to me. So, they are wanting me to pay for their postage to me AND from me, which I obviously dont think is right as I would have paid over £10 for nothing.
I have a feeling that if I go back and decline the partial refund and say we each pay our own postage ( as I thought we had agreed ), they will claim I agreed to pay both postages. All messages were done in ebay. Whats the best option, open a dispute? If so, what would it go under?
I have just started using it again so in real terms I am a bit of a newbie on it and a bit annoyed at myself that they are being like this and I didnt clarify everything first with them.
Thanks

Surely if you have the messages regarding the offer you made ebay will side with you0

I’m confused by the offer bit.If there is an item with a quantity of 3 an offer can be made for say £10 and this applies per item, and you can indicate in your offer the quantity you want, so the Offer will look like - price per item £10 x quantity 3 (so a total of £30] so it can’t be mistaken by either party. If however you made an offer on one and tried to add in terms for others, then the seller is correct, your offer price relates only to the item you are offering on, you cannot add in other items or make statements about including extras. The offer itself shows as an amount when seller receives it, a busy seller might not even notice a buyer has tried to incorrectly place additional terms on it. As you are new to buying it is worth noting that trying to buy things without going through the proper channels is risky, whilst on this occasion you paid through eBay , the message itself might be picked up by a bot and considered trying to deal off eBay, which would potentially get you restricted.
Anyway, putting that aside if you are returning for a change of mind and seller is a business , or indeed a private seller that accepts such returns, then a simple return request in eBay would give you back the entire amount you paid initially once you show that you have returned the item.If it is a private seller who doesn’t accept returns but has agreed in this instance to accept a return, they can impose terms on it which you are free to agree or refuse. However to complicate matters, a seller doesn’t get their eBay FVFs back unless they refund in full . The seller however if still using PayPal will lose all the PayPal fees either way.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Hi Soolin.I realise that perhaps it wasnt the 100% correct way to make the offer, ( a learning curve ) but the difference in price is so large that it should have rung alarm bells. I am sure its a private seller going by the name ( whether its a business pretending to be an individual I dont know ). I did put in "return for the full amount" but they have offered only a partial refund - Ive copied some of the details below and hopefully this clears it up a bit. Not sure why it says I can keep the item as its been returned..

You say "I sent them an offer on one item making it clear it was for all three".
BUT that wasn't what they advertised. Yet you sent them an offer for all three on ONE item.
You say that his message to you said, "The seller has offered you a partial refund. If you accept, you can keep the item, and we'll close the request." So you could have kept the item AND received the partial refund?
If £10 is all you have lost, I'd leave it there.

I think the OP has already returned so won't be keeping the item. The offer should have been done differently but the seller should have read the notes.
OP I guess you offered 60.20 including postage, how much was the listing at when you made the offer and was that a Buy It Now or an auction?
It looks like you opened a not as described return so did you use the eBay label to return or return it yourself? In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -

It was an auction with no bids at the time starting at £33 plus post and I offered £57 plus post for all three, there was no buy it now option. The previous sold price range is £30-£40. I posted it back myself, part of the lesson learned I suppose.

That's a good result I assume the case went in your favour or was it something the seller agreed to before escalation?bluffer said:update - got a message that they are now refunding the £60.20. thanks to all who answered. Lessons learned for future purchases.
