Not so Smart E.ON
Four days ago my switch from British Gas to E.ON was complete but as expected my smart meter stopped working as it was the original version. Today I contact E.ON who refuse to change it while admitting it might never work before my new tariff expires in a year's time. They now want me to go back to providing them with manual readings, which I have no intention of doing. Not happy with this I explain I want to resign up with British Gas, as I am not getting what I was promised, so I want the exit fees cancelled. Good old E.ON customer service kicks in with an answer that shocked me, as in the nicest possible way I was told it was tough and there is nothing I or they can do about it.
So E.ON, after only 4 days of being your customer you have got on the wrong side of me. Nowhere do you mention that I can't have a working smart meter, in fact you gave me the link to sign up for one so I would say you mislead me.
The best bit is that I have read that energy suppliers could get fined for not meeting smart meter targets yet when a customer wants one they say no.

Takes less than a Minute to read the meters and submit them on an app! Also useful to record your own reads as a back up just in case of any future queryBe happy, it's the greatest wealth0

Did you sign up for a smart meter tariff which should be lower? If so & it sounds like you did, you are the winner here. If I ever have to go on a smart meter I will still be reading my meters on the same date every month. Be in control of your own affairs.

The whole point of wanting a smart meter, which I had, is to measure daily, weekly and monthly usage rather than just the automated meter reading. They were not the cheapest supplier but they promised a smart meter while some of the smaller cheaper companies didn’t. E.ON has now been added to my list of companies that I will future blacklist as failing to meet even basic expectations.0

Suppliers are under no obligation to replace your smart meter: they are, however, required to see whether your meter can be adopted and enrolled by the DCC. These upgrades are happening in tranches: for example, Octopus has just enrolled a number of Secure SMETS 1 meters with the DCC. Given the number of SMETS 1 meters already installed, replacing them all with SMETS 2 would be a massive and very expensive undertaking which would add additional costs to all our energy bills.0

I would have thought that it was that device which helped you with the daily, weekly & monthly usage. I know my Scottish Power smart meter's IHD was working just fine when I was not buying my energy from them.0

Morning smjxm09,
Already some excellent advise on the thread so thank you guys.Currently, SMETS1 meters don’t automatically work with the Data Communication Company (DCC). This means customers’ meters may lose their smart functionality if they change suppliers.
So that customers with SMETS1 meters can change supplier and keep their smart functionality, there’s an industry-wide initiative to move communication of SMETS1 meters into the DCC.
Customers like yourself, with meters that were installed by another supplier and has since switched to E.ON, which has caused you to lose your smart functionality. The DCC will manage the migration of these customers. Once they’ve finished the migration, we’ll update their configuration to allow us to communicate with the meters and make them smart again. As soon as we’re communicating with the meter again, we’ll contact the customer to let them know.
We won’t be exchanging SMET1 meters – you do need to wait to be migrated. I am sorry that you weren't made aware of this as you should have.
We have actually started the process of the migration.
