Switching car tax from direct debit to one off payment.
Options
Any advice please would be welcome. My car tax is currently paid up to the end of the month, and is being paid monthly by direct debit, but I want to pay for the year in advance by debit card, and I can't figure out if there is a way to do it online. The advice on the gov website is to cancel the dd with my bank, but it won't allow me to pay for next years insurance starting from 1st December, there is only the option to pay for 6 or 12 months starting from the 1st November, which means I would have to pay for November twice. It seems like a bad idea to cancel the direct debit if I can't renew until December. Has anyone found a way around this or am I limited to only being able to renew on the 1st of December?

You can't buy new 6- or 12-mo tax before the month it starts - except for the last couple of working days of the preceding month.

Hi, this is very easy to do, cancel your direct debit, you can carry on using your car as you have already paid for the current month. You will have to wait until the 1st of the month to now pay your car tax as one payment which will renew annually unless you cancel.
I have been doing this recently, but only taxing the car for one month & then cancelling due to not needing 2 cars when working from home.2
