My wife and I got stuck in Turkey in March,we were on hols for a month, when hotels began to close and flights were being cancelled,we had about 16 days left in resort. We got in touch with travel Republic about getting back home, they told us that they could not help us as our flights had not officially been affected, and that we should make our own arrangements to get home.we managed to book flights, but on arrival at airport these were cancelled.
At this point we had no flight and no hotel and still travel Republic, won't help.
We managed to find an apartment in Member, and after a couple more days managed with a lot of help from some very kind local people to get flights back to UK.
Travel Republic are now trying to wriggle out of any liability, even though they left us about£2k out of pocket and only half the holiday that we had paid for,
It actually took8 months to get to speak to a real person to get fobbed off.

If they won't respond, and you paid by credit, not debit, card, initiate a section 75 claim against the card issuer for the breach of contract

Not impossible but March is quite a unique time to be in Turkey on holiday.  Had you booked a package holiday with Travel Republic or just the hotel?

    Where in Turkey is Member?
  • Bit more info required.  Who were your return flights booked with?  Did those flights run as far as you know?  Did you get kicked out of your hotel or panic and leave for the airport?   Was it a package holiday? All relevant as it doesn’t sound like you waited for alternative arrangements to be made for you.  If the hotel was still open at the time and your flight home was as scheduled then it may be an insurance matter if you had appropriate cover.

I wonder why people join MSE, post then never return?
Appears OP revisited to read thread replies but did not comment further.

Another person who should have booked with a traditional tour operator like TUI or Jet2 rather than an agent that is little more than a package arranger.

Well personally I try and resist not to be the first, replying to brand new posters.

As the majority appear to be one post wonders and yes they do come back, and look at answers / recommendations.

But never actually reply even after 4 or 5 pages. So majority are waste of space.  :'(

And do not deserve any help or advice. if only one post at start of thread.

Suspect there's far more to the tale than is being told.

I think in some cases people panic and sign up for multiple forums and post the same question everywhere in the hope of getting a fast response, then once their question has been answered on one forum they're not interested anymore.

To be fair if they travelled in March they possibly booked before COVID was even discovered and even if they knew the how bad the disruption caused by the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud and the twin towers terrorist incident in New York was, they couldn't have imagined how bad the disruption caused by COVID would be.
