compensation for incorrect missed payments on credit file

Options
Hi all, first post here sorry for the long write up I'm after some advice on what people think of my situation. in October 2019 i consolidated some debt with a loan (which was supposed to be temporary) which included paying off a Barclaycard credit card. During the phone call the adviser said i was clear to cancel my DD which i did, after 4 or 5 months i was getting ready to remortgage and the plan was to put the loan on the mortgage to free all debt up. I was unable to do so as i had 5 missed payment marker from Barclaycard on my credit file which damaged my score to the point i couldn't get the debt shifted onto the mortgage, they were incorrect as the card was paid off and had to stick with paying extra money a month out for the higher interest loan which was supposed to be temporary. Obviously covid hasn't helped my situation as the call centres were closed. I've finally had this resolved by Barclaycard who have given me £50 as an apology and said they will remove the missed payment markers. Obviously I know it's hard to prove how much extra a month this has cost me for a year but does anyone think it would be something I'd have a decent claim for with the Ombudsman as it's cost me a substantial amount during the year for a payment on a loan i shouldn't have had and has me taking the £50 made it so I wouldn't have further compensation (i just wanted it sorting & didn't think at the time, it was 8:30 pm when they rang)
Thanks in advance

  • No chance IMO.
Sorry but your post seems very muddled to me - loan taken out - was by choice or did someone suggest it to you?
Did you pay Barclaycard after receiving the loan proceeds?
It is never a good idea to turn unsecured debt into secured.
I have to ask again - who told you to apply for a loan? If you did it off your own bat then it is you who took that decision and you who must pay the price - whether you think the loan was temporary or not. You could have just left the Barclaycard debt where it was and paid it off with your remortgage funds?
  • the ombudsman does not like giving people money , they would consider £50 to be acceptable and consider case closed

No chance.  Your case relies on the fact that you would have been able to transfer the debt onto your mortgage and it is not guaranteed that you would have been be able to do that.  In fact, if you were already at the point where you needed to consolidate debt and desperate enough to turn unsecured debt into secured debt then it is likely that your finances were not sound enough for the additional lending anyway.  In any case, you will struggle to prove your case.
