Tax credits could have only been claimed as a couple so yes you will be liable for half the debt. If she was claiming as a single person then they wouldn't be contacting you now.

If their was a joint claim then you will be jointly liable. Proving it was a fraudulent claim may be difficult. However we are getting ahead of ourselves - you don’t yet know what the alleged debt is for.TomW1988 said:
But if my ex has done this, passing over the debt to me, without my knowledge, then i would still be liable to this?calcotti said:
Your first question is obviously to find out what the debt is for. If it is for Tax Credits they will not know the details - they will simply have been notified of the debt by HMRC.TomW1988 said:
If that is the case, and i manage to speak with the DWP over this. Do you know where I would stand?calcotti said:
I do wonder if your ex claimed Tax Credits as a couple. I can't see any other benefit that is likely to have given rise to a debt - however we are guessing.TomW1988 said:
No we didn't, not to my knowledge anyways as i was earning too much.KatrinaWaves said:Did you have joint benefit claims with your ex wife?
Literally been worrying for the last few days since the letter.
They will expect you to payback the debt in one go but if you can’t you should be able to negotiate a payment plan. If the debtis passed to debt collectors there will then be debt agency fees to pay as well as the debt.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0 -
Try starting to dialling a minute or so before opening time so you get through as soon as lines open.0
