Ok thanks guys. Well it's aer lingus and their website says drivers licence with photo is acceptable so guess I just have to go and be ready to try and argue. Will take extra documents with me to show name change too and see what happens

You can also use Ryanair
I've used my driving licence many times on their service
"A valid driving licence with photo is acceptable photo ID for travel on domestic flights within the UK and domestic flights within the Republic of Ireland. A valid driving licence with photo is acceptable photo ID for travel on domestic flights within the UK and domestic flights within the Republic of Ireland. "

I quoted these terms to them last week and was told, that this means.
I can fly from liverpool to glasgow using a photo driving licence
I can fly from cork to dublin using a photo driving licence.
But if i want to go from liverpool to dublin, i'm leaving the country and i need a passport.
that is what they told me at the ryanair desk at liverpool.0 -

Well that is what that does mean. But a little further on in their (RYANAIR) rules is this:
For British and Irish citizens who are travelling on flights to/from the United Kingdom to/from the Republic of Ireland (Common Travel Area), a valid driving licence with photo is acceptable photo ID. Passengers who are citizens of other countries travelling on these routes must present a valid passport (with visa if applicable) or a National Identity Card issued by the government of a European Economic Area (EEA) country.
I suspect you got a Ryanair operative who was even more ill-trained than most.0 -
first of all, condolences to you and your family. l dont know your birthplace newlywed but as you say family , if you or your father or husband was born in ireland you are entitled to an irish passport. l believe it is much quicker than the english passport office . a friend travelled to peterborogh from london to get a passport and they still did not send it when promised0

Maybe they thought you looked a bit dodgy

Well I have printed out the web page from aer lingus (who we are flying with) and have my photo licence, expired passport plus proof of change of name so hoping that will be ok.Newlywed at the point I joined the forum... now newly separated0

Just a quick update for those who have had trouble travelling to Ireland without a passport - Aer Lingus were absolutely fine. No problem at all to travel on a photo driving licence.Newlywed at the point I joined the forum... now newly separated0
