Aren't you able to open a local bank account in the country where you'll be working?

I can't help with your specific question, but I would advise that if you are travelling internationally for work, you always have a couple of credit cards with you. You never know when you will have to stay somewhere, or get a hire car or flight on an unplanned basis.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

In that case something like the Starling bank (no forex fees on their debit card) but I don't think they accept incoming overseas payments other than Euros. So you may have to use something like Transferwise or Fineco to receive your overseas salary, assuming your currency is supported. But in the long run, opening a local bank account would be best. Which country would you be working in?

Nope, Starling don't accept anything other than GBP and EUR payments coming from overseas.

Unfortunately, the OP hasn't provided any real info ... so difficult to provide constructive advice.

Most (foreign) employers from my experience will only pay into accounts that are local to them and under the same legal and tax regimes.

Typically - most (foreign) banks have expat products which can be applied for before time (with caveats).  Though, in many cases you will need to ask specifically as they are not advertised or mentioned on their online websites.  Caveats usually are that you must deposit a minimum amount and that the account is frozen until requirements are meet (like collecting account documents in person when you arrive at your destination or providing employment contract etc...).

All the times I've had to do this - this is how it has worked.

Given that London is a world financial center (for now - lets see for how much longer) most large foreign banks have at least a PO BOX or reception address in London.  So for many banks you can even organize an appointment and provide all detail & documentation in person and have everything setup and approved before you even leave the UK.
Some banks also have VIP money exchange rate conversion products - also not usually advertised - there are usually conditions to be meet like regular transfers - worth while asking about them as well.  Wish I'd known about them years ago - would have saved me thousands.

Seems strange that Op would ask 2 questions on the same subject (other in Credit Cards) yet not come back.
It would help if OP had said if they have a UK address and will be living there. Or are they moving around the world due to work and do not have a UK address.

This is one of these posts that poses more question than answers.....
