Energy company set up an account without my say so!

Hi everyone! First time posting so please bare with me. Me and my partner bought our first house last year (exciting I know!). We closed down all of our existing bill and started new in our new home. However, I have recently discovered that our old energy supplier has set up an account in my name! This only recently came to light when I checked my credit score. On phoning the company i was told because the new tenants of the previous property had not set up an account that had used my details to set up a new account! Surely this cannot be legal? I have had no emails, letters or phones calls to confirm this only it showing up on my account after apparently having this for 1 year!

Any advice is very much appreciated. I can't seem to find an answer

Did you notify your old supplier, give  final readings and get and pay your final Bill's for your previous property?

  • Yes it was all in my partner name cause I moved in with him after I finished university.  We notified the company and got money back as we were in credit.

Then the old energy company would not have your name.

Bu if any letters etc arrived at the old property addressed to you,  the new tenants  would.

I would assume for some reason they have used your name?

The energy company would not be able to contact you, as they do not have your phone, email or new address details.

Write a letter labelled COMPLAINT to your old supplier detailing when you moved out, the final meter reading and for speed include a copy of the final bill from them. Also include some proff of when you moved into your new home. Job done.

And check all 3 main credit agency providers and raise dispute if wrong info there.

When you moved in did you advise the current supplier of the new home, of the date you moved in and give meter readings, or did you just sign up with any supplier you fancied?.
What ever supplier the previous occupier used,. OWNS the right to supply that dwelling until you register with them, only after they have set up an account for you, are you free to move to any supplier you like.

If you have not done this, it seems that the supplier of the house you left also happens to be current supplier of the house you moved to, but the "Must register rule still stands"

But OP states the previous supply was not in her name?
