    Have a look at your local Adult Education dept - Some will run course to teach the basics of DIY. Or see if there is a Men's Shed in your area - You may be able to hook up with someone that can help fitting a toilet & sink. Neither job is particularly challenging or technical.
    Last resort, find a local handyman, preferably via personal recommendation.

    so do you ever get to the bottom of this, was it £400 all in and you just got things wrong in the end?

    There's no money in sparking. People happily pay a few grand for a plumber to swap a boiler, and yet want thousands of quid worth of electrical work done for £150.
