Driving licence expiry, extension and renewal

A warning for those like me with an expiring driving licence!

DVLA website informed me that my driving licence expiry date would be extended by a year because of COVID. However when I came to renew my car insurance this evening the company wouldn’t accept my driving licence number because they said it had expired.

I have now renewed my driving licence and I went back to renew my car insurance using the online quote I received earlier. However they still will not accept my driving licence number. My car insurance expires within the next week, hope this is sorted soon!

There is an automatic extension for 11 months on expiry, but you can't drive abroad- I suspect the licence shows as expired and that is your insurance problem.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

  • I dont recall having to put my driving licence number in when I renewed mine in August 🤔 at least it wasnt mandatory to do so. Maybe I am misremembering.

Most insurers do not require it, some may.

It allows them to confirm that you've told them the truth about the state of your licence, and any convictions.
That's not a problem, is it?

But, yes, they will also use it to confirm that you do hold a current licence.
I wonder if the extension simply hasn't applied? Have you checked your licence at https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence ?

Is this just the 10yr photocard expiry, or the actual driving entitlement (at age 70 or periodically thereafter, or earlier with certain medical conditions etc)?

    this may be th problem

If the licence expires before 31 December 2020

Driving licences or entitlements to drive that expire between 1 February and 31 December 2020 have been automatically extended for 11 months. This is because of coronavirus (COVID-19).

This service only shows the original expiry date, not the extension. The extension starts from the original expiry date.
