What kWh gas boiler do I have? 11 bedroomed bungalow.
Hi
I recently moved into a 1 bed bungalow. The previous tenant was on prepay British gas gen 1 smart meter. I've recently switched to EDF direct debit. I was wondering if the British gas smart meter is still reading correctly as when I look at gas usage when I sitch on my gas the highest KWH as been 8000. I thought the smallest combi boilers were 24KWH.

When I switch on the heating it's between 8KWH -4KWH0

You seem to be muddling up kW (power) with kWh (energy). If you are using 4kW for a couple of hours you'll have clocked up 8kWh. Remember that your boiler output won't be 24kW all the time.0

Clicked on this because I was interested by the 11 bedroomed bungalow.I am not a cat (But my friend is)6

11 bedrooms?With a 24kw combi?
Anyway, we will assume that’s a typo haha. The highest output of the boiler will be 24kw. That will be in hot water mode only. And will modulate. The heating side maybe less, perhaps 20kw on max rate, again whist running it will modulate itself down.0 -
@Scott_39 The reading on your gas meter should be of the form 12345.678 m3 Look closely for the decimal point and ignore the readings after it. ie this reads 12345
Read today (make sure its the m3 screen if you have a choice) and in a weeks time. Do some simple sums - note your consumption is shown in m3 and then you multiply by 11.2 to get kWh
Read the Smart meter itself - the one that's in the garage or an outdoor meter box. Ignore the IHD (In House Display) that sits in your kitchen - even better disconnect it and put it at the back of a drawer.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
As said above a combi requires something like 25-35kw to get heat into the hot water that is being delivered to your taps however when it's providing heat to the house the amount it produces will be limited by the dissipation of the radiators and will turn it'self down. Most reasonably modern boiler will modulate their output depending on the load rather than just turning on & off.
You should be interested in the amount of energy it consumes over a period of say an hour, a day or even a week rather than the instantaneous consumption which is misleading especially when you have just got a smart meter and see a really big figure on the IHD without actually understanding what it's actually telling you.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
This time of year is a good time to estimate your energy usage. Do readings now & 7 days from now. This when multiplied by 52 will give you a lovely overestimate of what you are going to use. Budget for that & you are laughing. As for the IHD well others say it better. Don't forget to read your meters yourself regularly. I always remember what I was told many years ago about computers (which these smart meters replicate) rubbish in rubbish out.
