startmestick

Got a startmestick to try in my old HP Pavillion dv 4000, instructions say works on any PC after 2001 so should be ok as bought this 2005. One way to start it is go to the boot menu but no option for USB boot, other way is Start the Windows xp and startmestick is showing in my computer, should left click on the icon then double click on the language but no language choice, any idea what else to try.

  • It's basically a form of Linux on a pendrive, as far as I can see. Something you could create yourself. Paying £££ for it seems ridiculous.

Do you mean the Boot menu or the BIOS setup? The boot menu will only show the options that are enabled within the BIOS. Have you tried the BIOS setup menus? I'm not sure that USB boot was a common option in 2005, but it's worth a look to see.
If you just want to find out if a given version of Linux will run happily on it but it won't do a USB boot, it would be worth making a LiveCD and booting from that. It will run a fair bit slower than the USB option, but it should give you a good idea of whether the chipset is compatible with whichever version you choose.

Definitely agree with that for £0 you could use something much better including Windows 10, any flavour of Linux  etc ... https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html

If "true" USB boot support isn't available due to the age of the machine, you can always bodge a USB boot solution:
