Remove 'Fake' Outdoor Roof

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help. We currently have an outdoor roof structure like below. As you can see part of this overhangs and is held by a pillar which we're looking to cut away. It seems a bit needless to me, is the pillar even required? It blocks a lot of light into the front room. Pics below, hopefully you can view to get an idea.

We're looking to recreate it to something like the below. (Obviously we have a storey extra than this comparison but it's the similar roof shape and removal of part of the roof/pillar that we're looking for).

What would we require to do this? Is it a challenging job and what would the rough indicative cost be? If anyone could help to give us an idea - that'd be great.

The pillar is holding up the roof, so if there's no roof, it's not needed.

Our last house was a semi and the neighbours have the added roof, we didn't.

In theory, you could demolish it yourself.  You'll want a renderer to sort out what's left behind and a roofer to tidy the new edge, I guess.   I'd be using one of my general builders to bring it down carefully, assessing the existing support as they go and do the carpentry required to create the new edge properly, but it should be relatively straightforward.

I can't see the downpipe, which is a consideration.

Really? A strange question - unless I misunderstand something.
Possibly, you can get rid of it when you build the ground floor extension that can support the first floor part currently supported by the pillar. I guess RSJs will be needed.

The picture that you want to duplicate is materially different because the upper floor is in line with the lower floor. In your case your upper floor extends beyond the footprint of the lower floor. You’d therefore need to get someone out to confirm if the pillar and (contents) the roof has any structural role or is decorative only.

Your front room's window is recessed in from the house's front elevation, so that pillar is holding up the otherwise-unsupported end of that flared roof extension. I'm pretty sure that's the case. (The RH roof end could, I guess, be cantilevered, but there's nothing to suggest that it is).

However, if you wish to add a small front extension as shown in the other photo, that pillar could either be incorporated in to the RH wall of this extension, or else be fully replaced by it. I can't see this being an issue for any builder - the new wall will do the holding up of the new roof.

Until then, it's surely needed. I wouldn't just remove it...

He wants to remove the roof and pillar, so the bay windows are visible, and I presume get more light into the living room.  At least thats how I read it.  Personally, I'd be extending the living room to fill that space up to the pillar in order to achieve a bigger room :)
  • Thanks everyone 🙂
Ic, you're right. That's the aim. Sorry, I didn't make that clearer. Just assumed that would be less hassle than extending which I assumed would require plans, permission etc to all be drawn up amongst other things?
