Do I have to accept a refund on a store card?

Options
My sons laptop went in for repair recently,it was 11 months old and still under warranty. I have been told the repair bill is over £720.obviously as it’s still under warranty I’ve refused to pay. I have been offered a refund of the £350 I paid (that was the sale price instead of £500) but on a gift card for the store and not back to the debit card I paid with . Do I have to accept this?? Personally I’m glad to be having a refund but not too happy about being tied to where I purchase a new one from
thanks in advance for any advice

  • Yes, if you're claiming under warranty and those are the warranty terms.

If you claim under your consumer rights, any refund would go onto the original payment card.

If it's part of the warranty terms then yes you do.

You do have consumer rights though but as it's over 6 months old they can ask you to get a report from and independent expert proving an inherent fault, with this you would be entitled to a repair (not worth it for them) replacement (probably the same as repair) or partial refund, this would need to be cash or back to your payment method.

Consumer rights wouldnt force you to accept a gift card however they are offering you a full refund. Consumer rights would allow them to reduce the refund to reflect the usage you’ve already had from the item so its up to you to decide if £350 gift card or circa £290 back to your debit card is preferable.
  • Thank you all,I’m not very tech savvy but was told the problem is the motherboard
