Solar panels

Help required. I'm in process of selling my late mum's house n just found the solar panels are in my late brother's name, now passed to sister in law. According to my late mum, she paid for the panels. EDF basically say tough. Not their problem. In discussion with my solicitor n OFGEM at present. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you find any of the paperwork?  This will be key.
Who was receiving the FIT (feed in tariff)??
  • Are you saying that your late brother paid for the panels; Mum got the benefit of the solar output, and your brother was recovering the cost of his investment in FIT and export payments?

Having just sold a property with PV solar, the  purchaser will expect to receive the MCS Certificate; warranties and a FIT transfer form at legal completion. Presumably, the documents are in your late Mother’s effects or held by your sister-in-law: they do need to be found.

Once you have the documents it should be a simple exercise to calculate - based on the annual solar generation - a fair buy out price to compensate your sister-in-law for the loss of future FIT income. Depending on when the panels were installed, this figure may be significantly higher than the purchase price of the panels. To avoid any issues with the sale, I suggest that this buyout would need to be done with the assistance of a solicitor.
  • My mum got little benefit, as my brother n his family lived in my mum's house. PS thanks for info. Very useful. Hopefully will get sorted.
  • I believe the panels should be listed on the Land Registry web site, find out in whose name they are listed.

Only if the panels are on a 'rent a roof' leasehold arrangement, which isn't the case here.
