Shell energy Smart meter trial

I am currently with Shell Energy for our gas and electricity (switched in September). A couple of weeks ago I received an invitation email from Shell energy for Smart Meter trial if I can book an appointment of fitting before 18th of December. In return they offer "either a new Geo Trio + Heating smart thermostat for your home or a £30 Amazon voucher reward".

I have been trying to avoid smart meter tariff in the last couple years due to negative feedbacks on the forum. However if smart meter is unavoidable in the future, I think I may be better off taking advantage of this trial offer. Just wonder if anyone have experience regarding smart meter from Shell energy? I tend to go for the £30 voucher but not sure if the Geo Trio hearing smart thermostat is a better option? There is very little information on internet about this particular smart thermostat. We have two zone heating control in the house so the smart thermostat seems not a big bonus for us?

Many thanks advance for your thoughts!

    Hi JJ_Egan,

Thanks for reply. The email doesn't say what happens at the end of the trial. I guess I just have to go on with the smart meter.
  • Ofgem fines suppliers that do not meet agreed smart meter installation targets. They are encouraged to try innovative ways of getting Customer engagement. Clearly, you are being swayed by the offer of a freebie. Once a smart meter has been fitted, I cannot see any supplier rushing to take it out.

I think the "trial" is seeing if £30 is a big enough bribe to get people to sign up for a smart meter!
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Hi Ectophile, that is also my thought if every house has to install smart meter in the next few years. Forgot to mention the bribe is not guaranteed "You’ll also receive either a new Geo Trio + Heating smart thermostat or a £30 Amazon voucher if selected for the trial."
