  • Now it's got cold I like a big mug of soup as a snack, but more the broth based ones so it feels more like a substantial hot drink.
I just make it with whatever veg is to hand, stock cubes, herbs and pearl barley. If it doesn't seem to taste of much if I add enough chilli/paprika/curry powder it seems to fix it and warms me up  :D
(For me this strategy is designed entirely to keep me out of the biscuit tin!)

Funny you should say that, littlegeenparrot, I made some potato, leek & pumpkin (don't ask!) soup as soon as I got back from the allotment this morning, and it's almost all vanished already!  Straight from the veg beds into the pot (obviously via a scrub in the sink) and it was a brilliant winter warmer.

ETA: fruit cake has also been mentioned, elsewhere; that's a big favourite of his (and mine) so I shall make one tomorrow!

Should be very interested in hearing more on this subject as am on the lookout for a light, moist and spicy fruit cake rather than parkin or similar. I once had a very good Marguerite Patten recipe that has sadly been lost somewhere along the way, TIA, goldfinches.

Can  I recommend thrifty lesley s blog? Loads of ideas on there. I'm not sure how to just get to the recipes but there are some really good ones.

Popcorn is high in fibre and low in fat, plus cheaper than nuts, especially if you buy plain kernels rather than the microwave stuff.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I buy the plain kernels and pop them in the microwave in a lidded pyrex dish no need for oil and then stir in marmite

That sounds nice!  I've got some kernels in the cupboard, think I'm going to give this a go - I like popcorn and I like Marmite so got to be worth a go but doesn't the popped corn stick in clumps with the Marmite?

I stir in the corn is still hot and depending on the marmite you can sit the jar in the hot water which will make if runnier

I have some good fruitcake recipes, goldfinches, which I'll look out & share tomorrow. My favourite has to be the Heligan Pineapple Cake, but it's certainly not the least expensive! Didn't get round to making one today as I was up all night with a tummy bug, but it's passed over now so normal service will be resumed tomorrow.
