Ideas for WFH inexpensive but healthy snacks, please!

I've just gone bust again on the Grocery Challenge thread, mainly because I've discovered my Other Half, bless his cotton socks, has been scoffing handfuls of hazelnuts & almonds at every half-hour coffee break whilst working from home, because we don't tend to keep biscuits in the house, unlike his office; two figure-conscious young ladies (our DDs) also live here! (Plus myself - I really don't need to get any rounder so try to avoid snacking.) I do make hobnobs from time to time, and my own favourite snack Cheesy Flapjack (savoury oat bars, to the uninitiated) but apparently they've been making him feel unwell. However, he's tall, very fit & active & probably does need more calories, and can only eat so many bananas; he doesn't tend to eat any other fruit. So please does anyone have any ideas for frugal but reasonably healthy grab-and-go snacks? Preferably ones to make, but I'm open to ideas for buying too; it's almost bound to be cheaper than large quantities of nuts!

What about  crustless quiche, you can make it with whatever you have in the fridge and either make one large or I make small ones in a muffin tin.  Will he eat something like hummus which you can make quite cheaply and leave him chopped up raw veg to dip,  also small chunks of cheese and cherry tomatoes or cucumber with maybe crackers

  • I'm a huge fan of home made scones both for sweet and savoury, cheap to make and very filling. Make plain (a fave in this house) to add either jam of ham or cheese or whatever. Of course you can also make fruit ones if they are popular for your family. A particular fave of ours is cheese scones, where you can throw any old cheese you have in the house at, blue cheese is one of my favourites. I agree with Brambling, eggs all the way... Boiled and left cold to snack on, crustless quiches or even quiches with pastry. Again a good value snack, lunch.....

Pink Lady apple pieces and Greek yoghourt.
I had some pink ladies last week but that's another story ;)

  • I can vouch for this white bean mash from Nigella, I made it with butter beans but I'm sure you could make it with cannellini beans if you preferred the flavour of those. Have a look down the comments for everybody else's variations which will give you lots of ideas too. I think you could use any oil you have rather than expensive olive oil and just increase the garlic and rosemary to compensate.

Her breakfast bars could be fairly cheap if you can get any good value bits from the supermarket and all the comments say that people have varied the ingredients considerably so here's that link.

Then I've not tried this recipe myself but it's in my queue to be made sometime and it looks fairly cheap if you don't use top quality oil or you could look around for a better value version.

Then lastly here's BBC Good Food's cheap baking recipe collection just as a start.

  • We have 2 growing teens in this household and we always have tinkers on the go. Search honeybuns tinkers in search engine and recipe will come up. They are basically gluten free oat cookies with choc chips - they are very filling and cheap to make.

I make them at least twice the size the recipe suggests and they keep you going for hours due to oats being slow release energy.

To make them healthy I use half the sugar and half the chocolate the recipe asks for and no chocolate topping but they are still delicious. I also just use dark chocolate rather than white and milk. I find the standard recipe far too sweet.   I buy the cheap 30p own brand dark chocolate to keep cost down.

I also sometimes sweeten with dates instead of sugar but the kids usually notice and complain when I do this!

Greek yoghurt is good with a little fruit. Very filling and healthy.

Beware "Greek Style" as it's not the same.

Asda currently have Fage 0% fat 170g pots 4 for £3.

Their frozen raspberries aren't that expensive either, they give the yoghurt a nicer flavour and the yoghurt in turn dulls the sharpness of frozen fruit. Otherwise I just use whatever fresh fruit I have at the time.

Approaching from a different angle. I got very good advice on here when my DS fetched 2 Uni mates home this summer and they ate almost my entire grocery shop in 1 day. I reduced the cupboard/fridge to mouth snacks. Once they had to put more effort into snacking, it reduced the frequency drastically. Instead I bought cheap pizzas (a combo of the 50p tomato and cheese ones and the plain bases) and added some bits to jazz them up that they had to add to themselves.
Cheap tortilla chips was another. They added salsa and cheese, but that's more messy.
At the same time I increased what they were eating at actual meal times and added more accompaniments.  As said eggs are filling, so is porridge if he likes that. Good luck it's certainly frustrating to go to your cupboards for an ingrediant only to find it's no longer there.
  • Thanks all, some excellent pointers there! He won't starve now if I hide the nuts to save them for the weekly nut-roast.

Although my husband's office is a 10 min walk, he's been working from home (mostly) since March. My milk bill has gone up a LOT, because I didn't know that he drank so much tea !

Husband has started baking although he hasn't watched GBBO at all. He's gotten way more health conscious during lockdown. He makes gluten free bread or rolls weekly and gluten-free brownies or cake when the mood takes him. I buy him nuts, raisins, berries, yogurt, sour cream, peperami,  cheeses, ham, pickles, mustard and mayo. I try to get special offers and make him try new things, like Polish pickled mushrooms and different hot sauces.

  • Rice cakes with a bit of peanut butter on are my fav go to snack when I need an energy boost.  Add some sliced apple on top to sneak in an extra portion of fruit.
