Learner Driver Insurance for Driving Test

Hi guys, I want to clear this car insurance confusion. I'm a car owner with a full license and my wife has a provisional license. I want to add my wife as an additional driver on my insurance policy for driving lessons. I understand she can't drive my car without supervision.  Can she take a driving test in my car under this insurance policy or I have to arrange some other sort of insurance?

Just follow the rules above including checking with your insurance company... the question really comes down to the class of use which is defined relative to the driver and so it doesnt neatly fit into any category.

Given its going to be a bit of an unusual question probably note time/date/agent name if by phone or get a transcript of the chat if done online just in case there is a later issue. Out of curiosity I asked a Direct Line online chat agent and they confirmed driving tests are covered as by default the examiner would meet the requirement of being an adult with a full UK licence supervising them

Your wife will be insured with a provisional licence, so another thing to specifically check with your insurer is whether your wife can drive home after passing her test - as she will then have a full licence, rather than a provisional one. It's likely that your wife won't be insured until you notify your insurers that she has a full licence.

And the premiums might shoot up, once she has a full licence. It might be sensible to find out what they might be in advance.

The reason is that, statistically, new drivers are much more likely to have accidents driving by themselves, than when they are learning with a 'responsible' person sitting beside them.

FWIW, you can also get standalone short-term 'learner driver insurance' for your wife, rather than adding her to your policy.
