Barclays pulling a fast one for PPI

Options
Hi all, I put in a complaint with Barclays for PPI last year with the result that they kept writing saying they will come back to me as soon as they can.
Eventually, they wrote back saying they could not locate my accounts.
I did reply in Feb this year to give them more info although I don't have the account numbers etc.
They did not respond so I have written to them another twice with no reply until today.
They are now telling me that the deadline has passed, referred to my letter in Feb and now saying they will not investigate my complaint.
Barclays will owe me about £3000 from the loans with ppi.
Is it best to go back to Barclays or move forward to the financial ombudsman?
I do think they are trying to avoid paying claims and I know others have had similar issues
Thanks

  • They don't owe you anything unless you have a valid mis selling complaint. Just having PPI wasn't a crime.

If you have further info that will help them find your accounts, then give it to them and ask that they continue the complaint.  But if they can't find your accounts, there's nothing more to do.

The normal response with this is to reject your complaint due to lack of evidence but ask you to supply anything you can that may support your complaint.

If the evidence is not sufficient to likely change the outcome then the complaint remains closed.

You are timebarred from the ombudsman.  You have 6 months from the rejection to refer it to them.

Barclays have a good reputation for PPI complaint handling in general.  However, no bank can magic information out of thin air.   They need evidence that you actually paid PPI.   They say they have none.  Unless you can show you did pay it, it is unlikely they would reopen the case.

  • If you know the approx amount you paid in PPI, how come you don't have any documentation providing the account number?
Provide your proof of postage for the other 2 letters to show you did respond to them and go to the ombudsman if they refuse to assist
Do keep in mind that older accounts (particularly those closed more than 6 years ago) tend to get deleted in line with the DPA/GDPR or archived away where they need an account number or similar to find it.
The onus also is on you to provide this information from your archives if they no longer have any records

    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)

    Hi
I can understand what you are going through with Barclay's, I have been fighting a case for 18 months with them,  my case has been taken on by ombudsman, I had all that,  "we can't find accounts"   yet they put false accounts  within the exact dates of a loan account they don't want to acknowledge,  I have all my paperwork and account numbers,  so I don't see Barclay's as a respectable bank anymore,  I think they do have your details but if you don't,  unfortunately it will not go in your favour,  the whole structure  Barclay's are using is,  finding out what  information you've got on your own financial history, and that will determine any potential claim, although they will have info in front of them.
Barclay's  paid out a claim to me from 1996,  so they had info than I had.
I wish you all the best,  and hope you do get somewhere with it
