Eon debt repayment fault

Hi all, hope this is in the right section.
I have a gas account with Eon and was in debt with them in March 2017 for £980, a payment plan was setup for £5 per week to be taken from the pre-payment meter. I received correspondence to say that as of October 2020, the meter will be setup for £5 per week and the balance is £776!! I also topped up the meter with £15 over 2 days and it has taken two debt payments of £5 each.
I contacted Eon via live chat to explain and ask whatvwas happening. I was astonished to find out that there was a fault with the meter/card and it wasnt taking the £5 per week repayment for the past 3 years or so, to which they failed to tell me until now! I asked why the balance was £776 as I was aware £5 was being taken for the past 3 years, to no explanation was given and only answered my other questions regarding the recent topups.
My question is should they have reduced the balance in accordance with what I would have paid over the past 3years seeing as it wasnt my fault but theirs? I think the balance should be up to now £280 or so.
Thanks in advance.

  • No the debt is owed .
ask them to start taking the payments ASAP or even increase from£5 if you can afford it to get out of debt.
