The post does raise interesting discussion on the new requirement by some countries for these test to be taken before travel.  Unless costs reduce dramatically and the process to obtaining them improved, I can see this as a real barrier for travel to resume. I might accept this if visiting a family member the other side of the world, not so if wanting a bit of winter sunshine in the Canaries. The cost and the faff just not worth it IMO.

Agreed. It's also a case of having paid for a holiday will you lose everything if the only barrier to going is paying out for a further covid test. We had a holiday booked before covid, but out destination required a covid test within 48 hours of departure. Was a real faff to find anywhere that would make more than a guess that the results would be back in time.
A lot of time it is the aesthetic clinics that normally stick to eyebrow lifting, jowl sculpting, teeth whitening etc who see a great money spinner (and the opportunity to stay open in lockdown) by offering covid tests.

Suppose this is the thing. Booked late Feb this year with Jet2, as it stands the trip is still on (have only paid the deposit thus far), I could move it but prices have gone up since I booked so in reality I have no choice but to go through the motions and continue to presume its still going to happen.

I will quite happily pay the 2 x £120 extra if needed but for some families I can see it being a cost too much, also there is the risk the test doesnt come back in time, or comes back inconclusive.

With you on this one. We had only booked the flight with BA when covid arrived, so we booked a fully cancelable rate with the hotel. Luckily the time of the long haul flight meant we had an overnight flight, so could book the hotel from the next day giving us cancellation rights until the flight would depart.
Covid test places were saying that for an eye watering £495 they could get results within 24 hours, but in the £250 range it was 36 hours for results with fingers crossed that there wouldn't be any upset.
It was the one silver lining on the lockdown 2 ban becoming law, that meant we could get the flight money back and not have the hassle of the tests.

Agree with this - as things stand its too hard to get a test in time such that you can guarantee a result before you fly - many providers advertise three day tests, but that's their turn around from receiving the sample!

We were due to fly on the 5th Dec to Tenerife.  We've managed to cancel our apartment and car, and will move the flights if they don't get cancelled before we go.  We just don't want the stress of being in the first batch of holiday makers that will probably inundate the labs that offer this service.
