Over a year to fit a window...

Just over a year ago I contacted a carpenter to fit a window. He gave me a quote and said he could start mid-March, a long wait, but in line with other people I'd asked.
At some point I paid part of the money up front to build the window sashes. The quote was £5000 (it's a massive bay window) and I paid about £1800 (IRC)
This start date was put back several times and eventually he began in September. The first week he did 3 "days", the next he did 2 and then he did about one day every. Now I haven't seen him for about 4 weeks and the windows are half done. He has said he will be here on numerous occasions and just doesn't turn up, no text, no phone call, just no carpenter (I spoke to him on Friday and asked if he could at least text if he wasn't going to turn up).
At one point he left a window without a catch on so it was flapping around, wide open during the night. Currently there is a sizeable gap in the window...
Finally I have had enough. I will be telling him today not to bother coming back.
I don't intend to give him any money and as far as I'm concerned he can keep any of the sashes he has made up for me and I'll consider it quits.
Any suggestions on whether this is the best course of action or what alternatives there might be. Also, what come back the carpenter may have - although I can't imagine him being together enough to even bother.
Thanks.
