For what ever reason I always used to think of the Yorkshire bank as being somewhat old fashioned

Lots of people would agree with you. That's why Yorkshire Bank, and Clydesdale Bank, are 'getting a Virgin Money makeover'

When I first opened a Yorkshire bank account, it really seemed old-fashioned, even for the fifties - high wooden counters, with a higher counter behind that, behind which the clerks could be seen making entries in ledgers with quill pens (not really quills, fountain pens), and making entries in your passbook, that the teller passed to them.

Then a few years later they moved into a new building with really modern sixties styling, and offered a credit card when they were a new concept. Ever since they've seemed as up-to-date as any other high street bank.
    Then came the Virgin takeover.

i remember going to their Coventry branch many years ago and thinking how old fashioned it seemed and even up to a few years ago the whole account opening process seemed outdated.  No experience of Clydesdale Bank

I've just documented my previous falling out with CB in another thread, but they were a curious mix of up to date, and very old-fashioned. They pioneered free banking and were ahead of the game with ATMs, while being very stuffy and formal to deal with.

They always seemed subject to the vagaries of their owners, who changed over the years, but never wanted to invest the money needed to move them forward.
