Hello
I didn't want to put my dog under again if I could help it but her eyesight is getting much worse. She is a Staffie and we think she is about eleven years old. We have had her for 10 years. My other Staffie lived to almost 16.
Has anyone had cataracts removed from their dogs eyes and would you recommend it ?
I have a really good vet and another one that is an eye specialist.
Any thoughts, advice ?
thank you

Many years ago, long before this kind of surgery would even have been offered for a middle aged / elderly animal, we had a dog that went completely blind. She coped extremely well, ran around the garden, never fell in the pond or put a paw on a flower bed. We just needed to be careful not to leave any new obstacles like a watering can in the middle of the lawn!

I allow her to nose lead our walks now. Every few days I bring her back to me leading but I want the walks to benefit her, not me.
I have noticed that there are certain roads she avoids, even the park. The last time we were there a dog came out of nowhere and flipped her over. We were both shocked. Neither of us saw it coming. Now she stops at the gate, has a good sniff and turns away.
Unfortunately she has become so clingy that sometimes I have to hand feed her. And it breaks my heart when she walks or runs into things. This is why I am coming round to thinking about surgery.
So glad your dog coped so well and thank you. Food for thought.

Someone asked the same thing a few weeks ago, it would be worth scrolling through the questions and having a read.
