Mobile Wi-fi Router

Hi
I need wi-fi for a flat I am in about 6-8 days a month maximum. The flat has a telephone socket but it has never been connected up. I do not want to pay over £20 a month for wi-fi if it can be helped. I only require basic wi-fi for my smart TV and to access the internet on my phone. I have been told I can get a mobile wi-fi router (I think that is what it is called) and then insert a data sim card. Can anyone advise of a decent mobile router and the best deal for a sim card? I would like a sim card where the data can roll over every moth if possible. I am not sure how much data I will need.
Any help greatly appreciated.

First thing is to find out the mobile download speed at your location from all the networks. Don't believe what their maps tell you.
  • Download speed is fine in this area for what I am looking for

Can you use your phone data signal as a hotspot?

    Too right.

I had a Huawei mobile 4G router from ‘3’ last year;...it was great for 4 or 5 days,... good speed and no drop-outs. However, after that honeymoon period the internet connection became so  erratic and intermittent it effectively rendered the router completely useless. A replacement router fared no better.

The signal strength never varied,...it always showed full strength but nonetheless it couldn’t deliver a reliable internet connection.

I’d committed to a 24-month contract with ‘3’ and extricating myself from their clutches was very difficult, to say the least.

That being said, my daughter uses a Huawei mobile 4G router from ‘3’ at her home and office and (for the most part!) it works very well.

At my sons address he can’t get a ‘3’ mobile signal at all,...despite the ‘3’ maps saying he is in a strong signal area for ‘3’ mobile reception.

I can use photo phone data signal as a hotspot for whatsapp messages and internet searches but it does not allow me to connect to my smart TV which is a nuisance.

What happens or doesn't happen, exactly? Which phone and which TV?

Why do you need a mobile based router for your mobile?

What do you need wifi for on your TV? Is it to stream programmes like Netflix/YouTube or something else?

Why not avoid another mobile phone contract for the router and just cast from your phone to the TV if using the phone as a hotspot doesnt work?
  • Thank you all for your help. You saved me from buying Chromecast which would have been no good. Looking at this from another angle I have Sky Q HD and my Sky viewing card has Sky Sport on it. Can I take my Sky viewing card and use it  in my son's Sky HD box and receive Sky Sports? Thanks.
