Couch on interest free - can I cancel

Options
My son has ordered a new couch from DFS on interest free credit,  he hasent taken delivery of it yet. He has just found out he may be getting made redundant and phoned to cancel the order. He was told if he cancels he has to pay £500 (the couch is £2500)
Is this correct even when he hasn’t taken delivery yet ?

If that's what their T&Cs say and he purchased the sofa in store then it's entirely reasonable. He can of course cancel the finance without penalty within 14 days but that itself doesn't stop the transaction, just the means of payment.

OK, a quick look at their online T&Cs and it says the following under Cancellation Policy: "It is your responsibility to return the items to our central delivery point in a good condition. However DFS recognise that many customers do not have the means to do this, and so will arrange collection during normal business hours (Monday to Friday) if requested. In such circumstances a charge of up to 20% of the price of the furniture will be made to cover the cost of collecting the items."

Although it looks like this is where the £500 charge comes from it should only really apply if the sofa has been delivered, in which case I'd get back on to them.

Did he order in store or online?
