Holiday cancelled, insurance likely

Hi, I booked a holiday for August 2020. Unfortunately a member of the party was very sick and unable to travel. We moved the holiday to 2021 but this family member will be too sick. (Diagnosis now terminal).
I hadn’t rebooked insurance. Can I claim on our first insurance?
Thanks so much.

Was it a single trip policy bought for the trip based on August 2020 dates?  If so you won't be covered.

If it was an annual policy, which is still active then you may have cover.  However, you would have had to tell them about the illness at the time it became known.  Also, I don't think an insurance company would pay out now for cancellation in August 2021.
  • Ok, thank you. I think this will be ‘one of those things’. It’s just such a lot of money to literally give away.

Contact the insurer.  They are the only people who can provide a final answer.

No harm in asking your insurance. They can only say no.
However, was this family member included on your insurance policy?  If not, you would need to have cover for illness of a travelling companion preventing you from travelling
Your policy would only cover those people named on  it, regardless of who paid what. If they are not listed they would have to claim on their own insurance for their share.

It might just be worth asking the holiday company to at least refund a part of the cost.  You might be fortunate enough to speak to just the right person.
