Sky have said they don’t port landline numbers to another adress (continuing the same contract.)
they told us BT might help.
does anyone know what the code we would need is called and if with that sky could transfer the number?

And would by then need to do anything more?
or are landline different than mobile phones?

If you're moving out of the area (ie 01904 to 01792 for example) you won't be able to take that as its a geographical number.Mobile numbers aren't tied to a specific location, you could sign up at Lands End and then use it again at John O'Groats.0

If you're moving out of area, then port the number to a VOIP provider, I've done this in the past0

Just moving with the same provider within the same local authority area. Bt. And sky seem to agree they won’t let you keep landline number.
i can’t see why when you can keep mobile numbers easily.0 -
I wonder if its the LLU thing? It seems to be documented that you can't keep it if you're with Sky, not really sure why? If you were with anybody else it might have been possible, but Sky? No. That being said if it was an LLU thing you'd have the same issue with TalkTalk, surely?0

It's just a central computer which can route the number anywhere. However it will i nthe end boil down to you don't own the number (even on business but they will keep charging you to keep it), any transfers come down to good will and some providers just don't want the extra costs to bother with number transfers.

TBH, moving home ( and taking the number with you ) isn’t ‘number portability’, number port is changing providers whilst in the same address , taking your number whilst moving home is just a ‘home mover service’ , and although BT offer it if you are moving within the same exchange area , there is no compulsion on any company’s to offer it, so if Sky don’t offer it, that’s really the end of it, they don’t have to.
If the new address is the same exchange as the old/current address, you could change provider to one that does offer a home mover service whilst still at the old address ,( that’s a number port ) then use that new company’s home mover service to move it to the new address, but obviously you may not have enough time before you move to arrange this
...as already stated you could move the number to a VOIP provider then you could move anywhere you like , with no ‘exchange’ or Telco limitations1 -

Is the new property on the same exchange or not?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks for your answers. I don’t know anything about exchange areas etc but it’s the same local code number. Seems my assumptions about the modern world are being challenged and I will just have to notify everyone of a new number alongside a new adress.0

You could use an address checker for both your current and new address to see if they are the same exchange, a rough guide the further the distance the more likely you will be off a different exchange, if it’s a relatively short distance then it may well be the same exchange, but as Sky don’t offer what you want, it’s irrelevant anyway1
