I am self employed and also have some lettings properties. I have used Quicken for years and years for book keeping allowing me to easily keep track of my income and expenses and then to be able to print out a categorised report to hand over to the accountant who fills in my tax return. However it has now stopped working and I can't get it sorted, so I'm looking for a stand alone package that is similar. I don't need an online package, I don't need to pay employees, I just want something to easily categorise my income and expenditure. Can anyone recommend anything at a reasonable cost please?

* My package is Quicken 98 so it has done it's time!

This might be a bit old school, but what about Excel?

As you have an Accountant, do they recommend anything that syncronises with their systems?  May even save on fees that way.
  • if you cannot develop your own system in Excel then pay / go with whatever your accountant does - at the end of the day all you are trying to do is reduce their fees, so you ought to be negotiating with them as to what they will find "useful" rather than obstructive (and therefore chargeable)

The nearest thing I've ever found to Quicken is the VT Software cash book that you can download free from their website.  https://www.vtsoftware.co.uk/cashbook.  Many accountants use VT for accounts production and transfer of data to tax returns, so it may well fit in with your accountant's systems too.

I use the free version of VT Cashbook as it's what my accountant wants but much prefer the HMRC one that they give out free when attending a free 3 hour course on being self-employed.  The HMRC guy was super informative and helpful.
  • Since you are looking to switch from Quicken and want similar software, you can try QuickBooks.

It will help you track your invoices, separate business & personal expenses. Moreover, it will also make your tax return filing easier and simpler.

Also, you can buy a monthly license instead of an annual subscription or purchasing the software to give it a try.
