Is it possible to register, tax and insure a 'Surprise' car in my daughter's name

As the title says we are looking to get a small car for our daughter and my wife is keen that it is a surprise.  Is it possible to register the car in another persons name?  Similarly with tax and insurance.

Are you sure it's a good idea?
Unless you know that she particularly wants a certain car, I would involve her in the decision.

It's perfectly possible , I've insured my daughters in the past online , all paperwork went to my email address

Online car tax only confirms to an email address if you enter one

My daughter who turns 17 next month thought she was going to have some input in to what car she was getting.  She was sadly mistaken.

I have already insured it for her, I have registered it in her name and will tax it.  I haven't encountered a problem
  • Thanks everyone.  I admit I thought the looking for one, and what to look for would be good experience.  However if it is possible we now have the 2 options.   Thanks again

Oh she gave me her preferences but the premium you were expected to pay for a salvage Fiesta or Polo was significant.  It was just at the start of lockdown and I picked up a Cat N 2016 Fabia Monte Carlo for £1,800 (a bit of a steal as another went through in the summer at £2.6k).  A Fiesta or Polo with similar damage would have cost me over £3k.

You would hope that it is not possible to do this, as it would be an excellent form of revenge to buy a car for someone and use it to cause problems by parking it illegally for example. However, I think you will find a way to do this.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

If you are adding her to your insurance then should be doable if you want to insure it just in her name then I'm fairly sure you would have to lie and pretend to be her.
Maybe worth  speaking to a broker they may be able to advise you better

That reminds me of Simon's Dad buying him a car in the Inbetweeners.

As a present, Alan gives him a second-hand yellow Fiat Cinquecento Hawaii, which Simon responds to negatively but reluctantly accepts

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Definitely possible.  We bought a car to share between our two kids a couple of years ago.  Although they knew all about it, I paid for the insurance on my credit card which was in sons name (but including daughter as a named driver + me as named driver), I paid for the car and registered in sons name.  I dont know the timing but if your insurance is going to include a black box then you may need to be careful as mine had to have installation of the device arranged within the first month of cover.

I guess the only spoiler you have to look out for is physical documents so you just have to look out for the dvla registration document for the car which will be addressed to your daughter and any insurance docs sent through the post in your daughters name.
    Tax can be done online.

It did take quite a bit of my time to research the cheapest car for the age/sex/location - turned out to be an Aygo for us.  Insurance was more than the car for the first year!, now its reasonable.
