Costa Rica and flight refunds

Hello everyone. We booked a family trip to Costa Rica, paid our deposit and also had to pay our flights in full at time of booking. Due to Covid, we postponed our trip with a view to travelling a year later. It is now clear that we will be unable to travel in light of the ongoing pandemic and potentially being unemployed. I understand that I will not get my deposit back from the travel company I booked with if I cancel but how do I stand on getting my flight payment refunded? This is approx £4000. Apparently the travel company have a credit note from the airline which we can use up until 2022 but can that voucher be issued to us? We have no e-tickets in our possession as there are no firm dates of travel. Prior to our postponement we had travel insurance which we didn't use as we never travelled. I haven't purchased insurance since as everything was up in the air with no real dates. I have emailed the company to ask that they clarify. Can anyone offer any advice in the meantime?

There are a number of factors that will influence your rights here:
What were the specific circumstances that led you to postpone, i.e. was it your choice or were you advised by the travel company that it couldn't go ahead?
If the former, what is the cancellation policy within the travel company's Ts & Cs?
Was it a package booking, as specified in the accompanying ATOL certificate?
