Add to your list - keep an electronic or paper copy of your bills.

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • I've been working on this for an hour now. I've got this far. I'm missing April-June so copied July. The same with November.
The large amounts in Jan-Feb are because the previous supplier gave me a bill for Dec-Feb in 2 figures rather than months.
I've not figured out what to do with the standing charge amount yet. Do I times that by 365 and add that as a yearly addition?
So far the monthly total has come out at pretty much what I was paying to begin with?

Yes, the standing charges are daily, so multiply both by 365 and add in to your totals.

Do the rates include VAT at 5% ?

    Yes, just checked.
  • This is what I've ended up with including standing charges.
Is this enough to make a good start of things?

Just to be pedantic, as 2020 is a leap year you need to multiply both by 366.

Or do the standing charge calculation on a monthly basis and get Excel to count the days: =(DAY(EOMONTH(A2,0))*0.14)

I don't understand what figures you're using - it's unlikely you'll use 1kWh of gas in any month!!  Stick to whole kWh.

Then why do the UP bills say "Total (excluding VAT)" ?

    It's the unit amount.

So in March and December you use 1kWh of gas and 2kWh of electricity?  UP seem to think your annual gas consumption is around 16,000kWh, so that's a big difference?

And your totals are wrong: £806.43 plus £111.58 doesn't come to £985.52, it's £918.01 plus the VAT makes £963.91
