Acer Notepad DVD not working

My husbands boss gave him a laptop the other day and said the DVD doesn't work but you are welcome to have it..... its an Acer Travelmate 8202 and looks like a very nice machine with built in camera etc etc but as he said when we put a disc into the DVD it always says No Disc in Drive E ....... everything else seems to work ok (not that we have figured out how to use everything yet ) could this be something simple ? I have no idea what I am doing and am a complete novice... OH suggested we buy an external DVD and doesn't want to muck about with it (his words not mine)

normally 1 or 2 screws out to remove the drive, new drive about £35
if you are lucky it may start working after reseating the driveEx forum ambassador
