Land Rover Free Lander 2003

Hi all
looking to buy a car so thought I’d do an mot history check and this is what has come up for recent advisories -

Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):

  • Nearside Front Track rod end ball joint dust cover damaged or deteriorated, but preventing the ingress of dirt (2.1.3 (g) (i))

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

  • Power steering component has slight seepage from a component Rack (2.1.5 (a))
  • Offside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Nearside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material From flexi too wheel cylinder (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material From flexi too wheel cylinder (1.1.11 (c))
  • Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Vehicles internal headlight adjuster altered to recheck lights ()
Is that going to cost a lot for a garage to repair and are they serious problems with it?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Brake pipes could need replacing or it could be the owner has put grease on them to protect them from corrosion. Tester can't check for corrosion due to the coating so passes but with comment to check. Even if they are in need of replacement should not be too expensive.

I would be more concerned you are buying a 17 year old car from a manufacturer not know for reliability. Has it got the legendary (not in a good way) k series engine that eats head gaskets. If it has check it has had the upgraded gasket fitted at some point.
  • Hmm ok thanks.
It’s a family friend that is getting rid of it and I don’t think they know too much either but they did tell me it has a bmw engine?

That one might worry me - Freelanders have a "common" power steering issue when on full lock - something to do with the Vcu or diff

Would that be an expensive repair bill from a garage do you think?

A new VCU is ~£450 for the part alone
Not saying it is that - just one thing to watch out for/bear in mind

So it's the 2.0 TD4 - the best of the engines in the Freelander 1. BMW owned Land Rover at the time, of course.

End of the day, it's a 17yo car, and you need to be prepared for it to have a terminal sulk at any time.
  • the steering fault could mean a new rack. I have no idea how much one is for that vehicle. I wouldn't pay a lot for it with that list of stuff needs doing. in fact if was interested in it,(which I wouldn't be), I would be offering probably no more than a couple hundred quid. if it was a good one, different story. but at least the seller is being up front and honest.

    Why?
  • A friend ran a 2005 freelander for a bit and then moved it on when lots of things went wrong which started happening regularly. As mentioned above it’s a 17 year old car, unless you’re either handy with spanner’s and can do the simpler stuff yourself or you’ve got a friendly garage who do you a really good deal you could be getting into a lot of costs with this.
How much is it offered at?
