Insurance quotes became astonishingly high

I wouldn't be getting quotes for every car you like the look of (sounds like you've already got a fairly good idea of which cars are going to be reasonable to insure and which will be prohibitive) .  Of course it's eminently sensible to get an idea of the insurance costs before you sign on the dotted line.  But narrow it down to one or two cars that fit your requirements, and that you're genuinely on the point of putting in an offer for.  Then get a quote for that car.  If the insurance is affordable for you, then go ahead and buy the car.
Yeah, this seems like the best strategy. I'll need to use the quotes I've got in the past to guess the insurance on the new ads, and probably avoid getting a real quote until the purchase almost certain.
  • Don’t cars state what their insurance category group is, so no need to run quotes for any and all cars that catch your eye? You’ll save yourself endless hours putting in car details on cars you don’t own....
  • I'm searching for car insurance for our 17 year learner driver son, as due to lockdown he can no longer have professional lessons. He would be driving my car. So far quotes have ranged from £266  to £1299, the mist expensive being Marmalade, recommended by this site, and the cheapest Sterling Insurance. I'm really confused why a specialist site would be so much more expensive.
I also tried experimenting with different excesses, ranging from £0 to £500. It made absolutely no difference to the overall price. Why would anyone pay the same price for £500 excess when they could have it for nothing?!
I've tried ringing Sterling, but they are obviously working form home, and I was asked to ring later this evening when they'd be less busy.
Will update later, but just wondered if I'm missing something, and should be going for the marmalade specialist insurance.
