Personal trainer & Gym

Hello!
I signed up with a personal trainer in September once I was more confident once the gym had re opened in July. I pay for my sessions via a direct debit a month in advance.
Now unfortunately the gyms have closed I have 8 sessions remaining for November and December’s payment due 20th November.
My pt has given me an online plan however I am in disagreement that it’s worth the same monetary value and he has agreed to do ‘some’ of my sessions when the gyms re open but won’t confirm a number. (I’m doing core and cardio exercises in my garage and the reason I visit the gym is for weights and his instruction, As I’m a novice)
I don’t want to continue with his service in December if we’re still unable to visit the gym as it’s really costly and I don’t believe I’m getting much benefit and no enjoyment out of it.

I haven’t signed any t&c’s and have nothing in writing so I assume I am ok to just cancel my direct debit and give him notice?
Please note he is self employed and we train in a pure gym. I obviously don’t want him to lose clients but it’s not reasonable.
Thanks

Try to come to an agreement with him, or ask how much notice he will accept to end the sessions.1 -
You haven’t signed anything at all? Even with the gym directly?
I would try and come to some compromise, even if you cancel the direct debit that doesn’t end your financial responsibilities.1 -

'Nothing in writing' does not mean you don't have a contract. It's just a verbal one, which is where the problems start.
A verbal contract is legally binding, just like a written one. The issue is determining what was agreed. No free lunch, and no free laptop1 -
He'll be authorised by Pure Gym to work in their gym. They don't let random herberts do PT in there. So it might be that even with the gym closed, he's still having to pay them their cut or something as an introduction fee.0

If services aren't being provided as originally agreed then you should be able to cancel without liability.
You cannot be bound to meeting your side of the agreement while simultaneously the other party vary their side with impunity. It means the contract is only binding on one party which upsets the legal balance/goes against the essence of contract law.
To fully understand how unfair what he's doing is, picture this. Covid hasn't happened, you tell him he needs to provide the same service but you're only going to pay him 75% of the agreed price, and there's nothing he can do about it. Would anyone expect the trader to accept that? I don't think so. Why is the response so different when the shoe is on the other foot? You keep using that word.
