On one hand I completely agree with you and was surprised myself to read it. But on the other taken in context, let's face it Sony aren't the best at making wise marketing decisions so in a way they're being quite consistent in making stupid, short sighted and illogical decisions. Betamax, MiniDisc, CD rootkit, faking blogs, racist PSP adverts, decapitated goat publicity stunt, and probably hundreds more.

well they will probably charge a fortune for the 80gb version.

Isn't the hard drive in the PS3 very easy to replace ? So why not just by the cheapest one and upgrade the hard disc? If people are that bothered about backwards compatibility just keep your PS2 or buy a second hand one.
