Gas fire pilot keeps going out (see video). Think might be issue with flames at back/underneath fire

Hi,
First post here. Just having trouble with fire that keeps going out because pilot doesn't stay lit. I think what causes it to go out is fire is catching underneath/at back of fire. Sometimes process is slow takes 5 mins as fire catches various areas. Or sometimes it is quick like video:

Would really appreciate any insight as the engineers we've had out so far have been useless and just want to sell us a new fire (for 3 grand!) I'm sure this is fixable/solveable.

Many thanks

Joe

If you take out space after the h the link works*
  • A pilot light issue alone is usually easy to solve, something like the thermocouple but from the video it looks like a serious problem, the flame below the unit suggests gas is getting out where it shouldn't and that is the big problem and potentially dangerous.

Gas isn't something to scrimp on repairs / replacements, it is just too dangerous.

  • With the way that the flames are coming out at the back of the fire as well as underneath it, there is only one course of action and that is to turn it off totally and don't even think about using it again until it's been inspected and rectified by a Gas Safe engineer.
I would go as far as to say that if there is a valve anywhere in the gas feed pipe, turn it off there.

If it's an older fire it may simply not be fixable.  Any Gas Safe engineer who thought that, and that is was unsafe, should have told the OP not to use it shouldn't they?
  • Thanks everyone for responses. Last person who came out was apparently qualified. And did the clean and just said "I don't know what that flame at the back is about". Was such an amateur. I've complained and his boss is coming out this week to see.

I won't be turning it on at all until fixed (if it can be). Thanks again to @[Deleted User] @DiddyDavies

If/when the boss arrives, I would ask him for the Gas safe registration number of the worker concerned and if they can't or won't supply it, put in a report:
    https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/help-and-advice/complaints-report-an-illegal/
and depending on what exactly the problem is, I would suggest putting in a report anyway.
  • That looks like you have a leak , the pilot light goes out because there's not enough gas to supply it and the leak

I would seriously doubt anybody would attempt to repair it probably even the manufacturers would condemn it and tell you to replace it (have you contacted the manufacturers to see if they would repair it?)

What is the make/ model of your gas fire and how old is it?
